I am entranced by structure

SGS works at the intersection of theatre, systems thinking, and cultural leadership. Over forty years, she has inhabited a series of boxes — and spent most of that time pulling at the walls between them.

As a director and dramaturg, she has worked across Canada — from the National Arts Centre to independent stages — creating theatre that centres complexity, equity and form as argument.

In her facilitation practice, she works on large-scale gatherings and keynotes for cultural organizations navigating transformation. Her work draws on the dramaturgical principles of structure, witness, and recombination.

Her writing spans scholarly articles and public essays. She co-authored Create Canada and Manifesto for Now. Her forthcoming essay in Theater Magazine (Duke University Press/Yale) examines dramaturgy as a lens for institutional transformation.

In 2020 she relocated to Nova Scotia, with her partner, where she co-owns and operates Birchdale — a historic off-grid retreat on 58 acres near Kemptville. She also has a dog named Matzo, who has opinions about everything.
